The Scissors – No go the lowdown

The Scissors at Mill Road Winter Fair, Cambridge 2015

Cambridge band, The Scissors return with their second album Haunted Mirror, released on German Shepherd Records on March 12th. No go the lowdown is a fine example of the band's distinctive blend of punk, rock, and psychedelia and other odd bits and pieces. Catchy pop with an unpredictable edge.

Freakaholics Anonymous - Fen Invasion

Cambridge duo and former radio show guests Freakaholics Anonymous release their debut album which is as random and kitsch as the Tron inspired artwork. There are tales of love between and eagle and trout, bus driver and passenger and possibly the first disco track on the subject of keeping tropical fish. A lo-fi synth fest with a healthy disrespect for convention.

Earlier this year Cambridge musician came on the show to talk about his latest crowd-funded album. The album has been recorded and copies sent to supporters. Everyone else can pre-order it via Bandcamp and listen to the selection of tracks. It's a delicious blend of disco, funk and weird synth gubbins. As Prison of Mars himself puts it: "I pull sounds from here, from there - chuck them together and vomit them into the ether. Many duck for cover, others are willingly hit in the face."

Gaze is Ghost - Revolvere / Murmuration

Irish-born and Cambridge-based singer-songwriter Laura McGarrigle, known as Gaze is Ghost returns with two new songs. McGarrigle's vocals enchant whether she is accompanied by a single instrument or elaborate arrangements of piano, strings and less common instruments. These songs demonstrate both styles.
The warm drone of the harmonium opens Revolvere. The song unfolds smoothly, powerfully with sounds carefully crafted and arranged like stars in a beautiful constellation.
Murmuration is simpler but equally powerful. Piano and vocals are the main ingredients with little embellishment. It's a recording in keeping with her compelling solo performances.
If you haven't seen her play before she has a few shows in Cambridge this month.

In this show I was joined by Alex Brooke a musician, podcaster and teacher based in Japan. It also features Patrick Sheil once again performing his own work and collaborating with Alex with great spontaneity.

The first ever show

Since the last show on Cambridge 105 I've dug out some early show recordings which haven't been available online since they were broadcast. I'll be sharing them over the next few months starting with this historic recording. It's a pilot show which is more or less the same as the first one broadcast in September 2007. The recording quality isn't excellent and my presenting and engineering is shaky to say the least but there's a terrific set of music and spoken word including some stories and poems recorded by Patrick Sheil, one of which I replayed on the last show.
I hope you enjoy my earliest attempt at broadcasting.

Headsound: Balloon Ascents - Cutout

Sofar sounds made a welcome debut in Cambridge at the weekend. The global movement curates monthly gigs in living rooms and other unconventional venues in 86 cities worldwide with more being added all the time.

Oxford group Balloon Ascents were an uplifting opener, harmonising dreamy pop melodies and helping the 20 odd audience members squeezed onto the living room floor to forget the cramps and backache.

The band have previously played Sofar in Oxford and are set to play more dates around Europe in the Summer. Cutout is one of several songs on their Soundcloud page.

Here's another local act I hope to feature on an upcoming show. Blood Beat is a piece that tries to achieve a lot all at once and succeeds. Dark bass lines and distorted guitar meet melodic pop vocals. Mouth is the moniker of Theresa Elflein who will not be local for much longer as she is moving to London in the summer. Make sure you catch her when she plays ARU Academy this Thursday.
